GLOBAL COMMUNITY HEALTH INITIATIVE

“We would fall short of really doing something significant if we forgot about the communities that surround us - locally, regionally, nationally and internationally - because at the end of the day, they are whom we serve.”

- Dean Philip A. Pizzo

Health is one of the most important key areas of Human Development Index (HDI). Healthy community body and mind are critical to conceptualize, develop and implement any form of development.

Global Community Health Initiative (GCHI) is a community based nongovernmental organization that is geared towards promoting and improving the health of rural community dwellers in Nigeria.

STATEMENT OF FACTS

With about 50,000 Doctors,162,489 nurses and midwives serving over a population of about 165 million people, it is practically difficult to attain a good cover of the population at all times. This is even heightened by the skewed or misdistribution of the practitioners in favour of urban centers, for obvious reasons; absence of basic infrastructure and functional equipments as well as social amenities in rural areas.

Pre-millennial era saw heightened tension caused by communicable disease, making experts to pay little attention to its sister. While Non-Communicable disease are rapidly rearing its ugly head in our societies dues to lifestyle changes, communicable disease still takes its toll on lives.

Gone are the days when Community Health Officers (CHOS ), Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWS), are seen only in the village communities. Seeing CHEWS and CHOS in the urban areas have become the order of the day as they search for greener pastures. This has been orchestrated  by the poorly funded human resources for health programs.
